My name is Rachel. I look after a few gardens and an allotment in the West London area. I have been living in Chiswick, West London, since I graduated from the University of the South Bank more than 15 years ago. I have spent many harsh winters in Grimsby, South Yorkshire, as a child and the mild microclimate of London has me firmly rooted here.
My own garden in Chiswick had been work in progress for many years. It started off with wall-to-wall lawn; quite a common mistake I later learnt … I thought grass was simple and tidy. The lawn care soon got out of hand and I was desperate for ideas.
I went through quite a few garden design books; they are full of pretty pictures but didn’t really help me to get started. In the end, following a friend’s recommendation, I enlisted the help of a garden designer, The Kew Gardener. The job was done and I was very grateful.
A few years later, I left what seems like a life-long employment from the “World’s Favourite Airline” and studied horticulture as an hobby. My interest grew and at the end of 2010, I was awarded a diploma in Garden Design from Capel Manor College.
Now I find working with creativity very fulfilling, I also love photography and this compliments my interests well. I hope to use this blog to focus and reorganise what I have learned in my diploma course and perhaps also to serve as an interest to those who would like to have a go at designing their own gardens.
